3" Scale Allchin (Royal Chester) Traction Engine |
Constructed from the 11/2 Scale drawings of W.J. Hughes
Paul Wainwright of Chesterfield provided what castings were
available at the time, many years ago and John Ellis
professionally built the boiler in 1986. I built this
engine using a Myford ML7 and a Dore Westbury milling machine.
I had to build the milling machine to complete the 3" Allchin
Traction Engine, all the machining was done on these machines,
the front wheels, flywheel, spud pan and differential centre was
done with the aid of a Rodney Big Turn. I turned the rear
wheels on my friend's big lathe in his workshop, the toolbox
lock is a working lock.
It was featured in an article in the Model Engineering
magazine in 1996 at the Lincolnshire Steam Rally unpainted,
pulling four adults. I rallied my Allchin for 3 years
before thinking about painting it. I decided to start
painting it in 2008. In 2010, I entered it in the Midlands
Model Engineering Exhibition in Warwickshire and won first
prize, I then entered it in the Sandown Model Exhibition in
London and won a silver medal (being beaten by Cherry Hill, the
world's top model engineer.) finally I entered it into the
Harrogate Model Engineering Exhibition in 2011 with a second
place. |
